HOT JAZZ IN
THE CARIBBEAN
WITH CHICAGO'S
WEST END JAZZ BAND
Chicago's renowned West End Jazz Band, featuring Mike Albiniak on drums
were featured in a unique Traditional Jazz theme cruise organized and
sponsored by The Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society. The society also
sponsors a yearly Jazzfest every July in Davenport Iowa (the hometown
of Bix Beiderbecke). Fans of traditional American Jazz music were treated
to a seven-day luxury cruise of the eastern Caribbean aboard the
Carnival cruise ship, Valor.
In addition to all the usual recreational activities, guests were treated
to daily concerts and jam sessions by the West End Jazz Band. Mike's
trap set featured various instruments such as traditional Chinese tack
toms and a 14"x28" Civic Center bass drum. Music historians
and scholars also provided insightful lectures and presentations about
the life of Bix Beiderbecke and the music of the '20's and early
'30's.
The Band also billed the cruise "the Worlds largest CD release
party" (as there were 3000 guests and 1200 crew on the ship). The
band officially premiered their latest Hot Jazz CD "The GoldDiggers
of Broadway".
"Everyone
had a great time, and the cruise served double duty for me since
my wife was able to accompany me, as we celebrated our 30th wedding
anniversary!, said Mike. Congratulations!
